STUDY GUIDE
K-7

Song: PEOPLE EVERYWHERE  LOVE TO DANCE (Bing Jensen)
Whether you live in an African village, a Brazilian town, or in North America, people love to dance.
Suggestions for discussion:
What countries do we associate with samba, square dance, waltzing, mambo, calypso, ballet, hip hop, highland fling, jig, limbo, tango, break dancing?

Song: MAN GAVE NAMES TO
ALL THE ANIMALS (Bob Dylan)
Through descriptions of animals and the use of rhyme, Bing gives clues to the kids so they can guess the animals.
Suggestions for discussion:
The key thing here is participation. What is meant by the statement: "the only failure in life is the failure to participate"

Song: MIRACLE IN MY BACKYARD (Bing Jensen)
A song about growing a garden. The words allude to compost and renewing the soil.
Suggestions for discussion:
What is miraculous about a garden? What is a miracle? The interdependence of air, water, soil, insects, and bacteria. What is compost? Nature is the perfect recycler. Are not we humans made from recycled material?

Song: ALL THROUGH MY LIFE
(Bing Jensen)
One melody sung in five different musical styles. I sing along with a pre-recorded tape from my new CD. On this tape are the sounds of a symphonic orchestra, a folk guitar, a rock& roll band, an acappella quartet
, and a jazz trio. I explain how all these musical styles came to influence me, as well as mentioning some of the qualities of the styles.
Suggestions for discussion:
What were the musical instruments used in each of the styles? Can you name important composers and performers for each of the styles? Does musical style reflect an attitude towards life? What is your favourite style?

Song: HUMAN HANDS
(Bing Jensen)
A song about the many and varied things hands can do. The kids act out with their hands what is described in the song.
Suggestions for discussion:
What are prehensile hands? Why can’t monkeys do all the things we can do with our hands? Hands and brains evolve together.

Song: I DON'T WANT TO GO TO BED (Bing Jensen)
A song about the politics of getting a little girl to go to bed. It empathizes with the kid’s point of view.
Suggestions for discussion:
How come laughter makes things easier to take? Can adults be childish too? How does it help to sing about not wanting to go to bed?

Song: I SING LOW (Bing Jensen)
This is a gospel styled song about liking who you are and what you’ve got.
Suggestions for discussion:
What did Bing mean when he sang: "I wanted to be like somebody else?" How do we learn self acceptance? What did Michael Jordan do after he was cut from his high school basketball team? Can anyone really have it easy?

"...The children went away from the performance feeling great, as did the teachers. He will definitely be put on our list of people to invite back. "

Lorri Bailey, Principal, Redfish Elementary, Nelson

" I am delighted to recommend Mr. Bing Jensen as a performer for elementary and family audiences anywhere!

He recently performed for us at South Creston Elementary School to a most enthusiastic audience. His high energy show demonstrated a wide variety of styles of music - from a cappella to rock (complete with costume changes) and spirituals of his own composition. The songs ranged from poignant to hilarious, and there were good audience participation opportunities. Altogether a great show!
Thanks Bing!

Lynn Johnson, Music Teacher, Creston

" I have since heard from many schools how much they enjoyed your humour, your rapport with the kids and your ability to perform for a wide variety of ages.

Dawson City mentioned you were the best performer they'd ever had! "

Michele Emslie, Program Co-ordinator, Whitehorse Concerts

" Dear Bing, I wanted to let you know how successful we felt your recent tour of our schools had been, and how pleased we were with your performances. Every administrator from each of the nine schools in which you performed let me know what great shows you had given. The comments they gave to me were the same comments I gave to you about the show I watched for the 400 students at this school:
-the show was fast paced, varied, entertaining, challenging, and above all, it provided incentives to listen. That, I think, was the secret of the shows. Many of the songs you sang required the students to listen in order to take part – and take part they wanted to do.
Of course your presentation was professional and reflected your years of experience and training and was nothing less that what we have come to expect from you. Congratulations on designing a great show and on presenting it in such a great way. We were impressed. "

Bob Bennetts, Principal and Cultural Co-ordinator, Peace River

...what the critics say...

Ernie Fladell, President
Vancouver International Children's Festival

"I particularly liked the fact that Bing never talked down. His material was fresh, funny, musically interesting and challenging. Pleasing an audience is important. However we also look for professionalism, originality, social responsibility, and a commitment to young audiences. In my opinion Bing Jensen has it all."

Chris Rosati, Director
Vancouver Comedy Festival

"My first encounter with Bing Jensen was in 1983. Bing was the most unusual and distinctive performer in an evening of unusual distinctive performers with the Vancouver Theatre Sports League."

Bill Henderson
member of "Chilliwack" and "UHF"

"Singing songs that range from utter nonsense to deep emotion and significance, Bing never fails to hold his audience very close with his warmth, wit, and tremendous energy for fun. A standout performer."

Shauna McGuinn
Recreation Supervisor,
City Of Bellingham

"Bing has been a great success at our concerts. His music is very fun and lively and very appropriate for our audiences, which range in age from infant to senior citizens. We have received much positive praise for Bing. ...He is a professional.
His performances come off without a hitch."

Otis Davis, Age 3.
"Bing you a funny guy."

Jane Howard Baker
Manager Public Affairs & Programming, Granville Island

"He is a flexible, warm, and dynamic singer and performer. His history as a professional actor awards him the stage presence he exudes when clowning on stage, but it is his personal charm and character that allows audiences to love him."

March 14, 1999
Maureen Douglas
Festivals Coordinator, Whistler Resort Association

"I have had the opportunity to work with Bing for the past fourteen years. I applaud Bing's venture into children's entertainment. I think
his skill, personality and disposition are ideal for performing for children and families."

Allen Kellog
Edmonton Journal

"Bing Jensen is a national treasure."

Shari Ulrich
"Bing is the ultimate children's performer. He has a wonderful child-like spirit and unique sense of humour. I couldn't say enough!"
